Default Kabbalah and Judaism

I've always wondered what the relationship was between the various groups of Judaism and the Kabbalah. I've the Orthodox Jews have a disdain for it, but what of the others? Do they consider it witchcraft or just another way to God?

This is a mystical and esoteric philosophy. This teaching was more popular inside the European Middle Age. Today, we have a resurgence into the pop culture (ex: Madonna). The main book for studying the Kabbalah is the Zohar.

For some debates in the past, I used parts of the Zohar as positive texts about the "trinity" in the Jewish tradition. However, this material should be addressed with a great caution. Like christianity, you have many schools of thought in the Judaism.

What I mean is, how do the various denominations of Judaism view the Kabbalah?

The Hassidic group (Hassidim) are those who study the Kabbalah more. Among the spectrum of all the Judaism schools, the Kabbalah is more or less popular.

The Kabbalah is about the supernatural, heaven, hell, angels, soul, etc. The popularity of this teaching is variable among the Jews, just like the popularity of the Apocalyptical books is variable in the christianity.

Usually, the Kabbalah is studied after the Torah and the Talmud. It is important to distinguish the Jewish Kabbalah from the pseudo cabalistic gurus of the modern era. This is not the same.

In brief, the Kabbalah, is in reality, the Jewish mysticism. That exists also but differently with the Catholic mysticisms and the Orthodox mysticisms but this phenomenon is more rare among the protestants. I cannot say that Pentecostalism is a form of mysticism. This phenomenon is too recent and do not have passed the test of time. Also, there is not an exhaustive assessment on this phenomenon. The confusion among these charismatics is very high.

Someone once told me that Orthodox Jewish Rabbis spit when they say the name Kabbalah because they considered it to be heresy. Is there any truth to that?

When you said that the orthodox Jews reject more the Kabbalah, you are correct. However, the Kaballah is more popular among the liberal Jews. and non-Jews.

Jews do not divide things like us. They agree or disagree. A Jew will always be a Jew even if he becomes an atheist. The nation, the ethnicity, is over the religion. The Jewish identity is more important. Woody Allen is an atheist who respects his Jewish traditions. He celebrates his Jewish holidays and his religious customs.

Our theology is more systematic and in boxes than their theology. Jews are willing to discuss and to test any theological ideas or philosophies . Even the christianity, the buddhism, etc. The dialogue with christianity is more open in our time because of the absence of persecutions. They will find similitudes if they exist and where they exist.

Yes, it is discussed in detail in KOTO. Kabbalah is called the "Secret Torah". It is basically mysticism rooted in occult power. The Torah and the Tanakh (entire Hebrew Bible) are viewed as allegory; the events of the Old Testament are not actual events, they are symbolic.

In a nutshell, Kabbalah teaches that the Godhead shattered in the beginning of time, scattering divine "light" throughout the universe. This light is in everything and everyone, and it is up to the Kabbalist to learn to access the power that will enable her/him to gather up all the points of light. Chanting the names of God is thought to be a conduit for gaining this power. The purpose of Kabbalah is to access this secret mystical power in order to transform the world.

The god of the Kabbalists can never truly be known by humans or he would not be God. Truth is relative; no one really knows God or his plan because he cannot be known.

Kabbalah emerged in about 330 BC due to the influence of Greek philosophers and Gnosticism on the Alexandrian Jews (during the rule of Alexander the Great).

In the days of the Apostles, it was Simon the Sorceror in Acts who actively taught doctrine similar to Kabbalah. I link Simon historically to Kabbalah and to Wicca in The Kingdom of the Occult.

Hollywood Kabbalah (my label for Madonna's brand of Kabbalah) is a creative and bizarre mixture of the basic teachings of Kabbalah and assorted New Age doctrine.

Hope this helps.

Including Madonna, there are other famous followers. They are Demi Moore, Elizabeth Taylor, and Britney Spears.

Blessings....

I posted this review on Amazon.com:

"This book is certainly a very good introduction about the occult world into a christian perspective. The authors of this book are serious and intellectually honest. My comment is based on my knowledge of Jill Rische and about her father, the late Walter Martin.

I am impressed by the appearance of the book (hardcover, thick paper for the pages, nice cover, strong spine, appealing jacquet, etc). The quality for the price is a real bargain. Definitively for a book of 733 pages.

Concerning the content, I need more time. Perhaps a couple of months. This is not the only book that I want to read before the end of the year. However, we can say that this is a book that was written according to an evangelical perspective (with some distinctive parameters), and this is good enough for me (I am a catholic). Perhaps I will not agree with everything but I may agree with a large portion of the material presented into this book.

This is a difficult subject and not many theologians have tempted to explore this matter exhaustively. Like any new book, probably the second edition will be revised.

I am anticipating to find some new informations about the occultism, black magic, haitian voodoo, african voodoo, brazilian voodoo, south american and central american voodoo, the american psychics, about the telepathy, the telekinesis, cults, etc. A variety of topics on the issue."

Default Its Universalism

Kabbalah is a foundation for Freemasonry, says Albert Pike in Morals and Dogma of ... Scottish Rite .... * Guy Ritchie [sp. err.?], some-time spouse of Madonna, invited Rev. John F. MacArthur to the mansion to tell him, "You're upsetting the Equilibrium of the Universe!"
