I was introduced to this site some time back, by a couple of terrific people who I had no fundamental disagreements with... I have also often heard it referenced in different discussions around the web... One consistent theme, whether expressed directly or not is Mormonism...
There are aspects of Mormonism which I find fascinating and probably more true than what some fundamentalist traditions try to offer as an explanation...and some things about it I find hard to swallow and the product of fallible humans skewing truths... but I say that about everything... the Mormons I've known in my life typically just live the fruits of the Spirit with a natural love and affection, personal dedication and easy peace of mind I've always sinfully envied...Judgment is no right I've been given, so please don't think this is anything more than a simple question...
Having read only a little of the information provided on this site about Walter Martin, I am missing any ties with the Mormon church which would make this a popular site for that particular denomination... Is my impression incorrect and just a matter of coincidence in who recommended I check this place out? Or is the connection zooming over my head as I write this?
I look forward to interesting discussion with some old friends I see around here, but would first like a little context just for curiosities sake...
much thanks :)

A Mormon referenced you to this site?
If it is popular among the Mormons, I can only say that the moderating on this particular forum is the fairest I have seen in any forum I have ever been a member of, but it is also a small community. Martin's "Kingdom of the Cults" should have enough information in regards to Mormon doctrine in context and its difference with Evangelical Christianity to set it apart as in direct contradiction to the Scriptures and history of the Church. Mormons call it a Restoration rather than a Reformation, insodoing, they naturally have to discredit the Early Church Fathers, but probably find it easier to just ignore them altogether. I hear many Mormons say that if they left their church, they would probably join the Catholics or Orthodox.
I have been a member of several other forums, from a few Oneness, a couple of Catholic, an Orthodox, and even on a Mormon forum, as well as CARM. Almost all of them, even those I should find favorable due to similiarities of belief, have certain rules set up that limits or censors the ability of opposing voices. Certainly TRiG points out one unnecessary drawback in regards to the word censoring here, but despite that, it is still a better site. I have been unfairly kicked off the Oneness sites, been restricted at CARM, and even warned on an Orthodox board when I challenge their belief in regards to using leavened bread as opposed to unleavened for the Eucharist.

I've heard if referenced many times in "Mormon circles" (or my little exposure to them)...and it certainly the hot board around here... I was just curious why that was... It's obviously NOT a Mormon site...
(and being el numero uno CARM poster for awhile with 33k+ >get a life< posts under my belt, consider it a compliment to have been "restricted" there...) I'm to much a newbie here to have any opinion on the moderation yet...

(mod edit) No personal attacks--and this includes attacks on Walter Martin.
All you have to do to see that Mormonism IS a popular topic on this site is look at the first page of this site which shows the level of activity for all of the forums here.
I just looked, again, and as of now, there are 21,060 posts in the Mormonism (LDS) forum, while every other forum only has a few hundred posts, at best, with most of them not even having 100 posts.
WHY that is, on THIS site, I'm not exactly sure, but the fact is, it (Mormonism) IS popular here.
My guess is that people either love us or they love to hate us.
Certainly TRiG points out one unnecessary drawback in regards to the word censoring here.So far, I have no complaints about real moderation. It's the automatic word censors I don't like: they're far too sensitive, and the resulting excess of asterisks can make the most innocuous statement sound smutty.

Bat-Man,
Not a good idea to slam Walter Martin when you're posting on his site. :)

I haven't personally attacked Walter Martin, as far as I know.
I was referring to the fact that "Mormonism" is a major draw to this site despite the work of Walter Martin, and I only meant that despite the work of Walter Martin to get rid of "Mormonism"... which I believe is something he wanted to do because I believe he wanted "Mormonism" to be replaced with something he believed was better... Mormonism still continues to flourish, even on this site which is devoted to the work of Walter Martin.
I don't think I was personally attacking Walter Martin by suggesting that he was trying to get rid of Mormonism. I think I'm just giving him credit where credit is due, according to that work that he sought to do in his own life.
If my perception of Walter Martin isn't correct in that regard; however, feel free to correct me by informing me of the kind of work Walter Martin was really trying to accomplish in his own life in regards to "Mormonism".
The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints is the true church on earth. Unlike other religions, we will not tell someone to not read the lost books that are mentioned in the Bible
Which books are listed in the bible as missing that we do not have today?
