Which Bible versions do all of you prefer?

My primary text is the NASB, with the ESV coming a close second. Other than that I will use other translations to get a fuller meaning of the original language.

I'll read most any of the main ones but will look at the NASB to see if somethings up in the Parallel Bible that has NLT NIV NKJV NASB.

I like to compare several together. I know a tiny bit of Hebrew so I sometimes will look at a "word-for-word" thing like NASB so I can try to figure out what was said in the original.

KJV is poetically, lyrically brilliant. But the English is pretty difficult.

My overall favorites are ones with natural, common English, so I'm fond of CEV, TNIV and the Message.

The OSB (Orthodox Study Bible) has for the OT a new version called the SAAS with the NT being the NKJV since it is printed by Thomas Nelson. The EOB should come out complete by end of next year.

I use the NAB, Jerusalem Bible, and sometimes the translation by Sir Brenton of the LXX. Not really anything prefered.

Do you know what the SAAS stands for? The only thing google says is "Software as a Service".

Yeah, I have a NT from them, with the Psalter I believe.

Ah, I had forgotten about the JB. I like that one, too.

SAAS stands for the St. Athanasius Academy Septuagint.

I'm surprised at the answers that said the King James Version (KJV). I was under the impression (perhaps incorrect?) that the American Standard Version (ASV) was the bible favored by the Jehovah's Witnesses prior to the production of the New World Translation. I must admit, I cannot claim personal experience (I am not a Jehovah's Witness).

I prefer the NIV or NIrV. My husband prefers the NASB.

Zondervan has a good guide showing which translations are more "word-for-word" and "thought-for-thought". http://www.zondervan.com/Cultures/en...Site=Zondervan (there's a chart that shows which translations are the closest to "word-for-word" and "thought-for-thought")

I beleive that if you press the average JW to use a bible other than the NWT they will use the KJV. All others are corrupt in the WatchTower's view.

"The Clear Word Paraphrase" is far worse than the NWT. John 1:1 says the Word was 'fully God', and yet Jude verse 9 states Jesus is Michael the Archangel.

I have around 45 different translations. I have one Bible translated by a Messianic Jew, the Jewish Publication Society's translation of the OT, Catholic Bibles, Protestant Bibles, and Luther's translation.

After my Bible-hopping days simmered down, I pretty much came to your conclusion.

NAS, NKJV, YLT, Interlinears and Parallels.

Being unfamiliar with it, how well has the CEV stood up to the critics?
